Recording & Remembering God’s Faithfulness

Right now, at the moment I am writing this, I’m in need of being reminded about God’s faithfulness in my life. This is a moment when I’m uncertain of the future, of what’s coming, of what God has for me, but then I’m reminded of how I got here. As I pull out journals from years past, I find that on January 30th, 2019 I was asking similar questions. On that day as I sat with the Lord I wrote, “the image of me as a community pastor role popped up.” And again a few weeks later, in February, I wrote, “Community Pastor? If that’s true, I will wait on You to move and bring that my way.” In May of the same year, God let me see His faithfulness in what He had put on my mind a few months earlier. I was asked to a meeting with a campus pastor and the first question he asked me was of my interest in changing roles to one like a community pastor. Almost three years later, I’m still in that role and God has been faithful in it. 

Tracking, recording, and remembering the actions of God is not a new thing, rather it is as old as Scripture itself. Particularly, in the book of Psalms we see that the Psalmists view it as an essential practice for God’s people not only as a safeguard against turning from God, but also as a foundation to build trust in God (Psalm 77:10-20 and Psalm 78). When we record what God does, or what we’re asking Him to do, on a regular basis (I’d suggest daily, or weekly) and review it periodically (I’d suggest monthly, or annually), we see His faithfulness at work in our lives. You’ll have prayers written in desperation answered, long term desires fulfilled, and an ongoing transcript of intimate conversation between the Creator of the Universe and you. Reading and being reminded of God’s prior help in our lives serves as a faith booster when new uncertainty arises. It gives us tangible proof that God was faithful before and helps us to believe He will be faithful now. 

Take some time to slowly read Psalm 36 and reflect on how David recorded God’s faithfulness. Use this as a pattern to begin remembering God’s faithfulness in your life. Some questions to consider as you read include: 

When have you seen, felt or experienced God’s love? 

When have you seen Him preserve life? 

When have you taken refuge in Him? 

When has He given you fresh life, a new chance? 

“Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,

    your faithfulness to the skies.

Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,

    your justice like the great deep.

    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!

    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

They feast on the abundance of your house;

    you give them drink from your river of delights.

For with you is the fountain of life;

    in your light we see light..”

— Psalm 36:5-9 

For me, remembering God’s faithfulness three years ago takes the worry and anxiety out of my uncertainty today. I still don’t know what all the answers are to the questions I have, but I do know that He is the same God today as He was in 2019. He was faithful then, so He will be faithful now.
